UPDATE: A video of G. Dep confessing to the 1993 murder of John Henkel has been released.
After walking into a New York police precinct and confessing to the 1993 murder of John Henkel, G. Dep has entered a plea of not guilty in his ongoing murder trial. Nearly one month ago, G. Dep (real name Trevell Coleman) told officers at Harlem’s 25th precinct that his conscience was getting the best of him after he shot Henkel during a botched 1993 robbery. The Manhattan Supreme Court quickly charged Coleman with second-degree murder—a charge, which carries a 25-to-life sentence. The 36-year-old G-Dep who was 18 at the time of the crime told police,
"I shot and killed someone 17 years ago."The murder reportedly happened on October 19, 1993 outside the James Weldon Johnson Houses when G-Dep attempted to rob John Henkel.
G-Dep, whose rap name was short for "Ghetto Dependent," grew up in those projects and told police officers he was riding a bicycle when he approached the 32-year-old Henkel on Park Avenue and East 114th Street and announced a robbery.
The former Bad Boy records rapper told police detective William Dunn that Henkel resisted and grabbed his .40-caliber gun. He allegedly admitted that he pulled away and shot his victim three times in the chest.
Coleman then said he fled and tossed the weapon into the East River.
The victim was taken to St. Luke's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
