Yesterday marked the 70th anniversary of Anne Frank’s diary which chronicles Frank’s experiences hiding from Nazis during World War II.
According to The Cutline, the diary was given to Frank as a birthday present by her father Otto on June 12, 1942 while the German-born Jewish family was hiding in the Netherlands.
The first words the 13-year-old wrote were "I hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone. And I hope you will be a great source of comfort and support."
The family hid in attics and any place they thought wasn’t going to be searched by Nazi soldiers. They were eventually betrayed and captured in 1944, according IB Times.
Frank’s father published the red-checkered diary in 1947, two years after Frank had died in a German concentration camp. The diary captures the feeling of grave danger while also showing Frank’s innocence as well as her maturity.
Anne Frank’s diary has been translated into over 70 languages and remains a best seller to this day.
